This month's special goshuin is here

2. What kind of flower is adonis? What month does it bloom? What is the origin of its name and what is its flower language?

When you hear the word "Adonis flower," you may wonder what kind of flower it is. Before introducing the special goshuin stamps of Jorakuji Temple, we will tell you about the charm of "Adonis flower." After reading this, you will enjoy looking at the special goshuin stamps of Jorakuji Temple even more.

2-1: What kind of flower is adonis?

Adonis flowers are pretty yellow flowers that begin to bloom in spring. They bloom in February , around the time that plum buds open, heralding the arrival of spring early during the Lunar New Year. Because they begin to bloom around the time of the Lunar New Year, Adonis flowers are also known as "New Year's Flower" (ganjitsusou) and "New Year's Flower" (tsuitachisou).

2-2: The origin of the name of Adonis

Adonis flowers are also a seasonal word for the New Year. In the Edo period, the name "fukutsugusou" (flower that announces good fortune) was used to mean the first flower to announce the arrival of spring. Later, the "tsugu" part was replaced with "ju" (longevity), which has a connotation of auspiciousness, and the name became "affinity flowers." The word "ju" is also said to mean "longevity" because of the long flowering period of the flower.

2-3: Adonis flowers are considered auspicious! Why? And their connection with nandina

Adonis flowers are considered to be so auspicious that they are often used as decorations during the New Year. The flower language of the adonis flower is said to be "bringing happiness" and "eternal happiness," and it has long been popular as a plant that "brings good fortune."

In fact, it is said that displaying this adonis flower together with nandina brings about even more auspicious meaning.

Nandina is known as "nanten," which means "to turn around difficulties (disasters)," and therefore means "to be able to avoid disasters."

When the meaning of nandina is combined with that of the Adonis flower, it has been thought to mean "turning adversity into good fortune."

The combination of nandina and adonis has long been considered an auspicious combination, and is used as a design on hanging scrolls and tableware.

In December, Jorakuji Temple distributed special goshuin stamps featuring nandina and dragons.

If you have a special December goshuin, why not display it together?
