Winter prayers depicted by dragons and nandina - The appeal of Jorakuji Temple's December limited goshuin stamp

December 16, 2024

1. Introduction

1-1. Overview of December Limited Edition Goshuin

Jorakuji Temple's December-only goshuin stamp features a design that combines the dragon and nandina, which symbolize good fortune and protection from evil. It is a special stamp that marks the end of the year and is filled with hope for the new year.

Furthermore, the goshuin stamp is inscribed with the characters "Samanda Bodhisattva Fugen" (Great Bodhisattva Samantabhadra), which represents the blessing of the Bodhisattva Fugen, who brings peace of mind. The Sanskrit character "An" engraved inside the jewel is a sacred symbol in Buddhism, and is said to bring peace of mind and purification energy in particular.

2. The Artistry of Special Goshuin

2-1. A majestic winter landscape created by the breath of the dragon and the southern sky

The December-only goshuin stamp features a majestic winter scene of nandina and a dragon.
A silver dragon dances in the winter night sky, creating a quiet New Year's Eve scene.

Wrapped in the crisp, cold winter air, the berries of the nandina tree shine red against the night sky. The silvery leaves are mysterious, like dragon scales, and exude a sense of strength in the quiet night.

The sight of Mount Ryokami in the distance also seems to suggest hope for the new year.
Why not take some time to quietly think about the year ahead while feeling grateful for the past year?

2-2. Design features

The December goshuin stamps are designed with attention to detail, with the themes of "silver dragon" and "nanten."

The dragon is the symbol of Jorakuji Temple and is believed to bring good fortune and happiness.
